R.I.D.D.E.M is a Hong Kong-based live band and

beat-making team focused on groovy sounds that get people up and dancing.

Combining Mat Lui on bass, Aldous Yu on keyboard, Akira Mimasu on drums, Arizton Pamplona on guitar and Reggie Yip on vocals, the group brings jazz, soul and breakbeat-infused sounds to the city’s live music scene.

Heavy on experimentation and confessional lyricism, the group’s vibrant creative presence make them an unmissable presence in both Hong Kong and Asia at large.

“Someone plays a motif and that triggers a response. That's how the conversation begins. ”

Q: DESCRIBE YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DO

Mat: We're a band, and we like to make people dance, and share the emotional energy we put out there for other people.

Akira: I guess it's a collective and also a safe space for all of us to express ourselves among likeminded peers and with a deep level of trust over the years.

Q: WHAT BROUGHT RIDDEM TOGETHER?

Aldous: I just wanted to make songs that we want to listen to. That's music that we don't hear outside or at least in Hong Kong. We just want to write ourselves, you know.

Q: WHAT DRIVES YOU?

Aldous: Mostly from our jam sessions. Whenever we come up with new things, we get really excited to finish them so we can play for other people.

Arizton: I think there's nothing better than seeing people smiling and dancing around your creation as a team. And that's really motivating, I think.

Q: WHAT HELPS YOU DO YOUR BEST WORK?

Reggie: I guess it depends what we're focused on in that session. For example, we had a really fun Sunday where we just got together and laid down a bunch of drafts. We just felt like we were ready to listen, play and be silly for a little while.

I wouldn't say that's any less or more productive than rehearsing for a show or producing a track we've laid down. At the core, because we're such a live-focused band, I feel like we're the best when we play live.
