As a hotel that includes sustainability in everything we do, we absolutely support the concept of farm-to-table and shortening paths from food producers to our hotels. And thanks to Jaana Wang at EAST Beijing, we’ve made roof-to-table a possibility. Most colleagues know her as Assistant Call Center Manager, Guest Experience, but we’re about ready to name her as “Head Gardener” too.

About six years ago, she became intrigued by the new life that sprang seemingly overnight from the watermelon seeds and avocado stones she would have otherwise discarded. Together with her fellow plant lover sister, she would buy a variety of plants and plant them together — often growing them in re-used plastic containers on her balcony with basic soil.

We asked her what her motivation was to keep doing this, especially given maintaining a garden is no easy task.

“I didn’t have a particular reason for why I chose to do this. Simply put, I enjoy it. And I think that’s actually more than enough.”

Today, she tends to EAST Beijing’s garden located on the terrace of the 3rd floor rooftop. Now in its second year, it initially began as an internal Sustainable Development initiative, where after finalising the plan with the team, Jaana set out to gather seeds, tools and resources. A portion of the garden’s yield which includes tomatoes and peppers are used in EAST Beijing’s restaurants where they can be enjoyed by our guests.

EVERY STEP A RISE TO PROMINENCE

Among her personal favourite plants include the easy-care
pothos that can grow with or without soil and that breathes
fresh air back out, and lucky bamboo whose segmented
growth reminds of her the Chinese expression “every step,
a rise to prominence.”
